Principal

Kelly Gunter, M.A., Ed. – Mrs. Gunter has over 10 years of teaching and leadership experience in the public school and post-secondary setting. Prior to joining Eastern Florida State College as an advising/testing specialist and adjunct faculty member, Mrs. Gunter taught Core Knowledge for three years. Her extensive professional experience includes: implementing a classical education model and Core Knowledge; serving as an elementary teacher and a Title 1 reading resource teacher; teaching college courses in educational leadership, composition, and developmental reading; and providing guidance and advising services to adult learners. Her educational credentials include a bachelor’s degree in Family and Child Sciences, a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and graduate certificates in exceptional student education (ESE) and professional writing. Mrs. Gunter brings to the PCCA an exceptionally strong background in education, with particular strengths in the areas of classical education, curriculum development and implementation, reading instruction, working with diverse and struggling learners, and adult education and professional development. Mrs. Gunter also authored PCCA’s charter school application and has worked with the school for two years before becoming principal.

Assistant Principal

Lisa Wheeler, M.A., Ed.– Mrs. Wheeler has 15 years of teaching experience in the public school setting. Her career began as a first grade teacher in South Florida. This position gave her great insight into the needs of special needs students and reading instruction; instilling a desire for further education. After earning her master’s degree in Reading Education for grades K – 12, Mrs. Wheeler relocated to Brevard County and became a Literacy Coach for Brevard Schools. The Literacy Coach position has given Mrs. Wheeler extensive experience in supporting classroom and ESE teachers with core and intervention instruction, diagnosing reading difficulties, designing interventions, administering and analyzing assessments, working with at-risk students, and professional development for both parents and faculty. Her work with education moved beyond the school level. Mrs. Wheeler has spent many summers supporting teachers and classrooms at the district level where she worked on teams to develop district level assessments, curriculum guides, standards documents, and professional development. Mrs. Wheeler has a long standing relationship with Pineapple Cove Academy. In 2006, Mrs. Wheeler began working with PCA’s VPK teachers. Through curriculum development, training, and data analysis, teachers worked to create a prestigious VPK Literacy program that is known throughout Palm Bay and Melbourne. Many of the students leaving PCA’s VPK program enter Kindergarten reading. Mrs. Wheeler also authored and organized PCA’s SES and private tutoring program. Students enrolled in the program experience great gains in reading through the use of Wilson Fundations.
